Originally from the east coast, after graduating from Williams College and Dartmouth Medical School, Erik moved to San Diego to begin service as a Navy medical officer. Following his internship training, he was stationed with 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. During that time he served with an infantry battalion and, later, deployed to Iraq with the General Staff as a medical subject matter expert.
Having previously been selected for an anesthesiology residency, Erik completed his medical training and achieved Board Certification as an Anesthesiologist. He requested an overseas posting and spent several years in Japan. Finding themselves at a career crossroad, Erik and his family came to the difficult decision to leave active duty service. They settled in the Puget Sound area of Washington state, and he joined a large private practice anesthesiology group there.
Erik held several leadership positions with his private practice group, including Anesthesiology Medical Director, and Vice President of group’s Board of Directors. Along with developing future group leaders, these positions involved extensive work with hospital administration, corporate-wide operations decisions, strategic planning, and quality assurance.
When the hospital system in which he practiced began aggressively absorbing the remaining private practice physicians into its employed medical group, Erik moved away from full time medical practice to focus on supporting individuals, small non-profit agencies, and local corporations as a professional coach and advisor. He completed an International Coaching Federation accredited program through UC Davis, and is credentialed at the ACC level. He also continues caring for patients as a Board Certified Anesthesiologist.
Erik is especially interested in how decision processes can make us more aware of our values, and, particularly when two or more values are in tension, how clarification of values can aid in decision making.
